Arterial hypertension in European Russia from 1998 to 2007: What did we achieve at the population level?

Background. The EPOCH study has identified major causes for development of cardiovascular diseases and complications in the population of European Russia. Arterial hypertension was found to be the most frequent cause. Aim. To analyze efficacy of treatment for AH at the population level in 1998–2007 and to identify tendencies in control of AH. Materials and methods. In 1998, a representative sample was created in the Nizhegorodskaya Region; in 2002, a representative sample was created for European Russia using the same design (19503 respondents aged 10 to 100), which was reanalyzed in 2007. The AH patient sample, which was analyzed in 1998, 2002 and 2007, was isolated. Results. For 9 years of observation, the prevalence of AH has increased due to a larger number of young respondents, particularly males. 24.5 % of able-bodied working age respondents and 10 % of patients younger than 40 had AH. For 9 years, more AH patient began receiving therapy for AH, except for AH patients younger than 40. Efficacy of the AH control was 18.7 % in 2007, although only 56.5 % of these patients used constant therapy. The efficacy of AH control did not increase with age. Conclusion. In real-life practice, the efficacy of AH control has not changed although the use of therapy and people’s awareness of AH are high in the Russian Federation.
