Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids for prevention of postoperative atrial fibrillation after coronary bypass

Background. Considering the increasing use of surgical methods for treatment of IHD and high (20–40 %) risk for development of postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF), the issue of preventing heart rhythm disorders is quite relevant. Aim. To evaluate efficacy of ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (Omega-3 PUFA) for prevention of postoperative AF in patients who have had coronary bypass (CB). Materials and methods. The study included 120 patients with sinus rhythm without a history of heart rhythm disorders who were scheduled for direct myocardial revascularization by CB. Patients of the control group received a standard post-CB treatment. The second group received ω-3 PUFA in addition to the standard treatment. Evaluation criteria included postoperative development of AF and duration of the patient’s hospitalization. Results. Addition of ω-3 PUFA at a dose of 2 g / day to the standard treatment prior to direct myocardial revascularization and in the early postoperative period significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative AF.
