Background. Administration of antianginal drugs is a necessary component of treatment for most IHD patients with a high FC. Selected antianginal drugs should be proven to exert a beneficial effect on prognosis, like nicorandil. Aim. To determine the effect of nicorandil on incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events; to confirm the safety of nicorandil for using it in addition to a standard therapy in patients with FC III exertional angina; and to specify the effect of nicorandil on arteriographic parameters of arterial wall stiffness. Material and methods. The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study of nicorandil included 100 patients with FC III stable angina, who were divided into two age- and sex-matched groups. Study duration was 12 months. Results. The nicorandil treatment group had significantly less number of angina attacks, reduced intake of short-acting nitrates, improved elasticity of large arteries, decreased number of hospitalizations for unstable angina, and improved quality of life compared to the placebo group. Conclusion. Administration of nicorandil in addition to a standard therapy not only improves the quality of life but also exerts a beneficial effect on the condition of elastic blood vessels and the course of disease in patients with IHD.
