Method for determination of optimal blood pressure reduction in the acute phase of different subtypes of ischemic stroke

Background. Time-related changes of BP reduction in stroke are a debatable issue. Aim. To study the pattern of BP reduction by hypotensive therapy in patients with AH during the acute phase of ischemic stroke (IS). Materials and methods. The study included 200 adult patients with acute IS (113 females and 87 males) aged 61±10.4 years. Time-related changes in BP during the inpatient period were compared with IS severity and subtype. Results. Severe functional deficit is not always associated with high BP, and the periods of BP elevation do not always correlate with worse recovery from neurologic disorders. A method was developed for determining the optimum BP reduction in patients with different IS subtypes. This method objectifies the reduction of both systolic and diastolic BP and allows determining possibilities for faster improvement of the neurological deficit. Conclusion. The proposed model highly appropriately described the optimum BP reduction in the acute phase of different IS subtypes.
