Features of red blood parameters in patients with ischemic heart disease and atrial fibrillation

Background. At present time, most of cardiology patients are characterized with multimorbidity. Mutual effects of diseases co-existing in a patient are understudied. Aim. To study features of red blood parameters in patients with a combination of IHD and atrial fibrillation (AF). Materials and methods. 160 patients with cardiovascular abnormalities (103 patients with AF and 57 patients without heart rhythm disorders) were evaluated. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell number, ferritin, vitamin В12, folic acid (FA), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and cholesterol (CS) were measured. Results. One-third of patients (34 %) with stable IHD had signs of hemoconcentration, and the presence of AF increased the hemoconcentration prevalence 1.5 times. 16 % of evaluated patients had anemia not associated with decreases in ferritin, vitamin В12 and FA levels. Conclusion. Blood “thickening” is probably compensatory with respect to existing hypoxemia and is associated with relatively low NTproBNP levels. The detected anemia apparently meets criteria of “anemia associated with chronic diseases”.
