Lung function in patients with ischemic heart disease and diabetes mellitus

Background. Convincing data on respiratory system damage in DM are not available. Aim. To perform a comparative analysis of external respiration function (ERF) and diffusion lung capacity (Dlco) parameters in patients with IHD as a function of DM presence. Materials and methods. Patients with stable IHD were evaluated and divided into two groups based on the presence of DM. Carbohydrate and lipid metabolic status was investigated using unified clinical and biochemical methods. ERF and Dlco were measured using a body pletysmograph Elite Dl-220v. Results. In IHD patients, ERF and Dlco parameters were within an appropriate range; however in patients with concomitant DM, these parameters were lower than in patients without DM. Dlco values correlated with the intensity of systemic inflammation, decompensation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and DM duration. Conclusion. Patients with IHD complicated with DM suffer from respiratory system dysfunction evident as decreased ERF and Dlco parameters. Suggested causes for development and aggravation of this decrease include hyperglycemia, inflammation and dyslipidemia.
