What limits the use of statins in routine outpatient practice?
The use of statins in Russia is unwarrantably scanty. The reasons for such situation include both objective (high cost) and subjective (overestimated risk of side effects such as increased incidence of oncological diseases and rabdomyolysis; formal attitude by physicians and patients toward prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia) ones. Review provides results of multicenter studies, which have shown the absence of convincing data, which would support the capability of statins for induction of malignant disease, and that only 100 cases of rabdomyolysis were recorded. One of the most common reasons for the non-use of statins is the formal attitude to the treatment of hyperlipidemia. According to the study ALLIANS, only strictly controlled lipid-lowering therapy can considerably reduce the risk for fatal cardiovascular complications and non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI).
