Study of bitter chocolate efficacy for correction of moderate cognitive disorders, anxiety and depression in patients with chronic heart failure of ischemic origin

Background. Chronic HF may represent an extracerebral cause for development and / or progression of cognitive disorders, anxiety and depression. Significance of bitter chocolate for correction of moderate cognitive disorders (MCD), anxiety and depression is understudied. Aim. To study efficacy of bitter chocolate in correction of MCD, anxiety and depression in patients with CHF of ischemic origin. Materials and methods. The main group and the control group included 30 IHD patients with CHF each. Patients of the main group received 20 g of bitter chocolate daily for 12 weeks. Wechsler subtests 5 and 7 and the Burdon correction tests were performed for evaluation of cognitive function at the screening visit and the final visit at 12 weeks; the HADS scale was used for evaluation of anxiety and depression severity. The multifactorial analysis of variance ANOVA and the Wilcoxon non-parametric paired test were used for statistical analyses. Results. At the final visit, significant improvements of cognitive test results were observed in the group of patients receiving bitter chocolate. Bitter chocolate did not exert any beneficial effect on severity of anxiety and depression. Conclusion. Bitter chocolate 20 g daily can be recommended for correction of MCD in patients with CHF of ischemic origin.
