Urgency. Despite development of treatment of cardio-vascular diseases (CVD), the rate of heart failure remains high and it is the leading cause of death in elderly and senile patients. There are significant changes in the structure of CHF causes over the past decade: increased frequency of diastolic heart failure, as in old patients there is a high proportion of patients with increased myocardial stiffness due to hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and low rate of other possible CHF causes in this age group (e. g., cardiomyopathy and valvular heart disease). However, there is few data on the rate and causes of CHF in hospitalized elderly and senile patients. Aim. To analyze frequency and causes of heart failure in elderly and senile in-patients. Materials and methods. Retrospective analysis of medical records (out-patient records, hospital discharge summary, hospital chart and survey data) of 510 patients aged 70 to 95 years. Results. The rate of CHF is 33.33 % of total hospitalizations. The leading cause of CHF is coronary artery disease, including its combination with hypertension and diabetes (67.65 %), while the percentage of patients with systolic heart failure is 47.65 %, and patients with diastolic heart failure – 20 %. One-third of patients have other causes of CHF (chronic pulmonary heart, pulmonary embolism, acquired heart disease), including rare (primary amyloidosis, constrictive pericarditis, congenital heart disease).
