Urgency. At present time, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is not included into clinical guidelines on the treatment of CHF. However recent data of studies demonstrating clinical and subjective improvement in patients receiving EECP warrant further studies of this method in the treatment of CHF. Aim. To study the effect of EECP on the RAAS cascade in patients with CHF. Materials and methods. Study enrolled 43 patients aged 40 to 60 years with CHF of ischemic etiology (II–III NYHA FC) in the compensation phase with systolic dysfunction (EF 30 to 40%). A part of patients (n=21) received, in addition to drug therapy, procedures of external counterpulsation while the others (n=22) received only a standard drug therapy. Time course of renin, aldosterone, serum creatinine levels and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) were studied. Results. After a course of EECP most patients showed a significant decrease in renin level by 24 ± 4.3% and increased GFR. In contrast, patients receiving only the drug therapy had a tendency to increase in renin level; GFR remained unchanged in these patients.
