Mental status and quality of life in patients with chronic heart failure

Urgency. Effect of mental status on the clinical course and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases is presently proved. However data on psychological and behavioral peculiarities of patients with CHF are very scanty. Study aim. Comparative evaluation of mental status and quality of life in patients with CHF. Materials and methods. Studies were performed on 276 patients with CHF of ischemic genesis, 106 patients with non-ischemic CHF and 50 patients with uncomplicated IHD. Mental status was evaluated using the Zung Depression Scale, the Spielberg Anxiety Scale, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, the Life Style Index method, the Heim method, and the SF-36 instrument for evaluation of life quality. Results. Patents with CHF had the following conditions: mild depression (52%), alexithymia (84%), enhanced level of personal (98%) and reactive (95%) anxiety. Patients with CHF had higher tension of mechanisms for psychological defence as compared to normal values. Disadaptive behavioral stereotypes predominated in patients with CHF of ischemic genesis. Mental peculiarities in patients with CHF of ischemic etiology depend on gender of patients.
