Heart failure and diabetes mellitus: prevalence, morbidity and prediction
Results of epidemiological studies have evidenced that the prevalence of HF in patients with CHF is 10–35%. Furthermore these diseases are interrelated. It was shown that the presence of CHF is an independent predictor of DM. Review considers the mechanisms underlying the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy as a cause of CHF in patients with DM and also the principles of therapy for CHF. One of DM complications is the disturbed balance of the cardiac autonomic nervous system. Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CVAN) worsens the prognosis of cardiovascular diseases in patients with DM. Timely detection and treatment of CVAN allows decreasing the risk of sudden death in patients with DM.
