An epidemiological study was performed in the European part of Russian Federation (EPOKHA), which allowed analysis of risk factor (RF) prevalence in patients with arterial hypertension (AH). Aim of study was determining the incidence of different RF in patients with AH and respondents without disease in a representative sample. The study was performed in 8 subjects of European RF. It was shown that AH prevalence was 83.6% in women older than 65 years and 68.1% in men older than 55 years, which indicated age as a determining RF for AH development. Women had AH significantly more frequently than men. The following RF were significantly more common in patients with AH than in respondents without AH: obesity, alcohol abuse, salt abuse, sedentary mode of life and hereditary history. In more severe AH, prevalence of such RF as obesity, sedentary mode of life, salt abuse and hereditary history was increased.
