The use of acetazolamide in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases
At present time the carboanhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide is used not only in glaucoma, epilepsy and high-mountain sickness but also in the treatment of cardiac and cardiopulmonary insufficiency. In heart failure, acetazolamide is used to overcome resistance to the action of loop diuretics and in the treatment of central night apnoea. Acetazolamide beneficially influences blood gas composition in hypercapnic patients with underlying chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD) and enhances efficacy and safety of furosemide in patients with chronic pulmonary heart. Acetazolamide is efficient for prevention of cardiovascular complications in high-mountain sickness. The acetazolamide test is used for evaluation of the state of cerebral circulation.
